We are guided in our work by our predecessors, teachers, Scotland’s tradition-bearers and elders;
by the wider movement of cultural revival and land stewardship;
and by our ancestors who stewarded these lands and traditions for generations.
While we form the Shieling Collective who run events and coordinate this work, we also call on regional elders, Gaelic and Scottish tradition-bearers and guides with specialised skills and experience to join us and deliver programs - as well as to mentor and guide us as we bring this movement of cultural reclamation and revitalisation forward.
We stand on the shoulders of those who worked towards this vision before us, including many of those who put their energy into the former “Shieling Project”, as well as the crofters, farmers and native Gaels who tended these lands for countless generations.
We also draw on the collective strength of the wider movements across Scotland and around the world to reclaim land-based lifeways, culture and wellbeing. Our work strives to offer another path for people of North-Western origin — such as Scotland — to reclaim our own culture rather than appropriate others.
We understand this work to be in solidarity with other movements to reconnect peoples to land, reclaim access to land and to culturally grounded practices of wellbeing and autonomy.
When you join us for a program, you join Scotland’s story of healing and remembering.
