Our Vision

We envision a Scotland where empowered communities thrive as active stewards of the land, practicing sustainable crofting, restoring biodiversity and protecting wild spaces. Communities are grounded in Scottish and Gaelic heritage and living culture, with a deep sense of dùthchas — belonging and reciprocity with the land — being central to daily life. This is a Scotland where people celebrate Highland traditions such as the Shieling way of life, and lead the way in practices that heal the land, people and communities.

Our mission is to establish The Shieling Collective as a living hub for cultural revival, land stewardship, and holistic wellbeing. By offering immersive experiences, training, and community events, we aim to equip individuals with the traditional skills, cultural knowledge, and practical tools to regenerate the land, nurture communities, and reclaim a profound connection to Scottish and Gaelic culture and identity.

Participants will leave inspired and empowered, ready to rekindle their own hearths and share these practices within their communities and beyond.

Our Mission

Our Means

We will achieve our mission by:

  1. Teaching Tangible Skills: Offering courses and workshops in traditional crafts, crofting, and sustainable land practices, such as natural tanning, basketry, and regenerative agriculture.

  2. Cultivating Cultural Roots: Immersing visitors in Scottish & Gaelic culture, cosmology, storytelling, song and music.

  3. Fostering Wellbeing: Hosting events, retreats, and gatherings that center mental, physical, and cultural health, for communities facing challenges such as isolation or deprivation.

  4. Creating a Community Hub: Providing a space for collective learning, celebration and solidarity through ceilidhs, seasonal gatherings, and collaborative projects.

  5. Restoring and Reviving: Rebuilding the historic Struy Shieling site, thus preserving Scotland’s cultural heritage.

At the Shieling we offer diverse programming that brings you back into connection with Highland culture, the land itself and traditional practices that lead to holistic wellbeing, empowerment and sovereignty.
